Wales fans overwhelmingly want change for Ireland, name debutant as best player and predict Welsh defeat in Dublin

Wales rugby fans have named debutant Shane Lewis-Hughes as their man of the match from the Six Nations finale against Scotland.

Almost 3,000 readers responded to Gist Vile’s post-match survey to give their verdict after Wales’ fifth consecutive defeat.

Despite the result and various areas of performance to improve on, Wales debutant and Cardiff Blues flanker Lewis-Hughes has been singled out for an impressive display.

His debut was made all the more impressive considering he wasn’t even named in Wayne Pivac’s original autumn squad.

Out of almost 2,000, 33% named Lewis-Hughes their Wales man of the match, followed by Liam Williams (14%), Alun Wyn Jones (12%) and Leigh Halfpenny (10%).

A pretty grim score of 3/10 was the most common answer (26%) to sum up Wales’ performance on a scale of one to 10, followed by 24% saying 1/10 and 23% opting for 2/10.

Defence was an improvement, in fans’ views, from France, while a “lack of passion”, attack and breakdown were cited among the disappointments.

Wales have less than a fortnight now to prepare for their next Test, the Autumn Nations Cup opener away to Ireland. They then have three more matches, against England, Georgia and one of Scotland, France, Italy or Fiji to round off their autumn schedule.

We asked fans who they would choose if they could select only one different player for the Dublin encounter, and the majority opted for Josh Navidi – who has evidently been missed while he has been sidelined for Wales’ two matches so far after recovering from concussion. Callum Sheedy was the next player fans were calling for, followed by George North, who was dropped from the matchday 23 after the defeat in Paris.

Finally, we asked fans who would win against Andy Farrell’s Ireland side out in Dublin on November 13 – which almost 3,000 fans answered.

96% of respondents predict an Irish win, with 4% going for a Wales victory.
