Swansea City’s significant transfer hint at Plymouth Argyle as multiple squad updates emerge

Jordon Garrick and George Byers missed Swansea City’s pre-season win over Plymouth Argyle due to injury.

The pair were sent out on loan last season but returned to the Swans following the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign.

Byers is carrying a groin problem while Garrick was due to start at Home Park but missed out with a minor hamstring concern.

Garrick travelled with the squad to the south west coast of England along with Ollie Cooper and Ben Cabango, who also sat out the game.

Ollie Cooper is continuing to work his way back up to full fitness after suffering an ankle injury in May while Cabango has only recently returned to training after being with Wales at Euro 2020.

Byers did not make the trip to Plymouth while Brandon Cooper was also absent. Connor Roberts is continuing to recover from the groin injury he suffered while on international duty at the Euros.

Summer signings Joel Piroe, Liam Walsh and Kyle Joseph all featured in the second half of the Swans’ 2-1 triumph at Plymouth on Tuesday night.

Piroe replaced Yan Dhanda at Home Park and played in the No. 10 role – with Joseph and goalscorer Liam Cullen being deployed further up the pitch while Jamal Lowe and Morgan Whittaker could operate in wide positions.

It’s understood former PSV Eindhoven man Piroe could be used in a deeper role in his debut campaign at the Liberty Stadium, despite the fact his preferred position is as a forward.

Dhanda – who is now in the final year of his Swansea contract – has been linked with a move away from south Wales while academy product Ollie Cooper remains inexperienced at senior level.

Swansea remain in the market for an additional striker this summer, meaning Cullen and a potential new recruit could be battling it out for the main striker role while Piroe could slot in further back.

The summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, August 31.
