Newcastle’s botched Swans plan for Woodman

Reports in the north east state that Newcastle United’s intention was to loan out Freddie Woodman to Swansea for a third consecutive season.

Keeper Woodman spent two successful campaigns in SA1, helping Swansea to two play-off finishes.

There had been hopes for him to stay another term in south Wales but Swansea’s failure to land Premier League football put the brakes on any deal. Woodman was close to joining Bournemouth on loan for the 2021/22 season but an injury crisis in the goalkeeping department at St James’ Park put paid to that as well.

Newcastle journalist Liam Kennedy stated : “The ideal scenario for everybody would have been for him to win the Championship play-off final and come up with Swansea, have a season on loan with them in the Premier League and cut his teeth in the top flight before coming back to Newcastle ready to challenge Martin Dubravka for the number one shirt.

“You can make plans as much as you want but they get scrapped.”

Swans’ summer signings rated

Swansea brought in nine players over the summer, with their fortunes, so far at least, mixed.

Joel Piroe, Liam Walsh, Kyle Joseph, Jamie Paterson, Ethan Laird, Flynn Downes, Rhys Williams, Michael Obafemi and Olivier Ntcham arrived at the Swansea.com Stadium before the transfer window closed, and after 10 games gone of the season, we’ve run the rule over how they have got on.

Seagulls ‘a great test’ for us – Martin

Russell Martin says tonight’s Carabao Cup clash against Brighton is a “great test” for his side.

Swansea head into the game with Graham Potter’s men on the back of a 3-3 draw with Luton and will be facing a team with a similar ethos as their own – albeit one a bit further down the road.

“It’s a great test for the guys, it’s a great place to play. It will be a tough game, but I think it will be a good game to watch,” said the head coach.

“There will be two teams trying to play in a similar manner, not exactly the same, but it is a real test and it is a chance for some of our guys to get on the pitch and show what they can do against top class opposition.

“We have had two excellent results in the cup, the challenge here is to try and do it facing a team from a higher level.

“It’s a game to look forward to, but we will only enjoy it if we go out and put in a good performance.”

Forest ‘volatile’ place says Neil Lennon

Former Nottingham Forest man Neil Lennon has warned Steve Cooper he is heading into a “volatile” club.

Chris Hughton was sacked last week, with former Swans boss boss Cooper appointed as his successor on Tuesday.

Cooper becomes the the 11th different boss in the space of just seven years at the City Ground.

Lennon says the new man needs time at a troubled club.

Speaking on Sky Sports , the former Celtic and Bolton boss said : “They’ve had good managers there. Chris has a great record in the Championship and the Premier League.

“Mark Warburton was there too, Martin O’Neill as well.

“I remember speaking to Martin about his time there. He finished the season well and then they sacked him in pre-season and brought in (Sabri) Lamouchi, and you’re thinking ‘where’s the logic?’

“It’s very volatile. It’s a big club getting good crowds but there’s something missing.

“Maybe they’ll give Steve a standing where he can take control of the recruitment because that’s going to be important for him to get his certain style of player in.

“They had a good win at the weekend and they have the basis of a good squad. But he needs time.”
