Swansea City 11pm transfer bulletin as Southampton’s Michael Obafemi joins and Olivier Ntcham to complete move, Brentford’s Fosu deal off and Matt Grimes stays put

Swansea City endured yet another manic transfer deadline day as several deals were completed by the club.

They have completed the signing of striker Michael Obafemi on a permanent deal from Southampton.

The Swans are expected to pay a base fee of around £1.5m for the striker, a sum that could rise to £2m with add-ons. He has signed a three-year deal with the club.

They are also expected to announce the capture of free agent Olivier Ntcham on a permanent basis after he was released by Celtic.

However, they are expected to miss out on Brentford’s Tariqe Fosu, although it comes as a result of Fulham’s failed quest to sign captain Matt Grimes, meaning the central midfielder will remain in Swansea for the foreseeable future. He is out of contract next summer.

On the final day of the summer window, attacking midfielder Ollie Cooper sealed a season-long move to Newport County.

And the youngster was swiftly followed out of the exit door by fellow academy product Connor Roberts who joined Burnley on a permanent transfer.

The right-back signed a four-year deal with Sean Dyche’s men having made 152 appearances for Swansea’s first team, scoring 11 goals.

Russell Martin had long stated his desire to add to his squad in the final stages of the window, and the Swans pulled off a real coup to recruit defender Rhys Williams from Liverpool.

The 20-year-old will spend the duration of the season on loan with the Swans having signed a new long-term contract with the Reds.

A lack of firepower has been a real concern for Swansea, and those worries were somewhat worsened as Jamal Lowe – who netted 14 league goals last term – secured a £1.5m switch to Championship rivals Bournemouth. The versatile attacker signed a three-year deal with the Cherries.

Kyle Joseph also moved on, with the former Wigan Athletic man joining Cheltenham Town on loan.

Swansea responded by pursuing one of their former transfer targets.

Striker Obafemi was close to joining on loan in January until a muscle injury scuppered a potential move.

But on deadline day, the 21-year-old underwent a medical with the Swans with a view to securing a permanent switch to the club.

Martin’s side were also closing in on a deal to recruit free agent Ntcham following the midfielder’s early release from Celtic earlier this summer while they knocked back a third bid from Fulham for captain Grimes.

And in a late twist, they pursued a loan move – with the deal likely to include an option for the transfer to be made permanent – for Brentford’s Fosu. However, that switch collapsed shortly before the 11pm deadline.

Lincoln City showed an interest in signing Morgan Whittaker on loan, although a move failed to materialise.

The Swans return to action against Hull City on Saturday, September 11.
