Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 June 2021 – Commended for their Faith
Topic: Commended for their Faith
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.
Scripture: Hebrews 11: 32-40
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow? • Is there any command for me to obey?
All of us would like to have the kind of results stated in vs.33-35 in answers to our prayers. Ours may not be as fantastic but they are really and truly enough for us to be glad and grateful. Yet our passage today raises some questions on prayer. First there is the one about people like Rahab, Barak and Samson. Their lives appeared not to have honoured God and yet God honoured them (vs.31-32).
Secondly there was Jephthah who took a rash decision that had terrible unchangeable effect on his daughter (Judges 11-12). Then there are those noted in vs.36-38 whose faith seemed to have failed them. Think of people you know whose experiences are like any of these people. It is impossible to explain these things.
However, from vs.13 and 39-40, we see God gives the same reward to all at last. They are all heroes of faith, examples for us to follow. Another generation will reap the benefits of their life of faithfulness. How far will this be true of you?
• So What? Faith looks beyond today. Are you able to say with Daniel’s colleagues, whether God intervenes or not, I will never bow to pressure that will lead me to sin?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
• Read vs.39&40 again and thank God for the better things He has given you through Christ’s death and resurrection. • Pray for yourself, not to take the grace of God in vain
Offer a Prayer of faith in Line with
• Jer. 9-11; Matt. 22:1-22
