Covid cases in Swansea City camp see pre-season match with Bristol Rovers called off

Swansea City’s pre-season clash with Bristol Rovers has been called off due to positive Covid-19 cases within the Swans’ first team bubble.

The Swans were due to take on Joey Barton’s men at the Memorial Ground on Saturday afternoon, but the game was postponed at 10am on the day of the game.

It comes after the friendly fixture at Swindon Town last weekend was also cancelled due to ongoing concerns at the League Two outfit.

Alan Tate was due to take charge of Saturday’s game following Steve Cooper’s departure from the club on Wednesday evening.

The club are set to appoint John Eustace as their new boss.

A club statement read: “Swansea City’s pre-season fixture against Bristol Rovers has been cancelled due to positive cases of Covid-19 within the first team bubble.

“The game was scheduled to take place at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

“After positive cases were identified, the club decided it was in the best interests of both players and staff – as well as everyone connected with Bristol Rovers – to cancel Saturday’s game in order to minimise the potential spread of the virus.

“In keeping with Welsh Government guidelines, those individuals who tested positive will now undergo a period of isolation.

“All staff and players within the first team bubble will undergo ongoing monitoring and testing.

“All supporters who purchased a pass for the SwansTV Live stream will be refunded accordingly.

“We would like to thank Bristol Rovers for their understanding on this matter and wish them well for the season ahead.”

The Swans are due to return to action against Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday night before hosting Southampton at the Liberty Stadium in their final summer fixture three days later.

Expected new manager Eustace was interviewed for the role following Graham Potter’s departure in the summer of 2019.

He – along with Cooper and Cameron Toshack – made the final three in the interviewing process, although the club plumped for Cooper who led the Swans to back-to-back play-off finishes in his two seasons in south Wales.

Swansea kick-start their Championship campaign at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, August 7.
