At 40 years old, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright has found the fountain of youth. He has won 16 games this season and will look to keep his tremendous roll going Saturday at Busch Stadium against the San Diego Padres.
Padres starter Yu Darvish has regressed throughout the season. He has surrendered at least four runs in eight of his last 11 starts, and in his last 10 starts, he has a 7.88 ERA with 15 home runs allowed in 48 innings.
Wainwright has done the opposite. He is 9-2 with a 2.02 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star break, going at least six innings in each and allowing three runs or fewer in 15 of his last 17 starts.
After having MLB’s best bullpen ERA entering August, the Padres’ 5.38 ERA the past 30 days is fourth-worst. Since the start of August, San Diego is scoring the second-fewest runs per game in the NL.
The Padres entered the series 10-21 in their last 32 games and the Cardinals had won five straight games and seven of their last eight, so St. Louis will keep the good times going on Saturday.
The play: Cardinals, -105.
