Cardinals manager Mike Shildt loses it at umpire over sunscreen in bizarre scene

An odd scene unfolded during the St. Louis Cardinals’ victory over the White Sox on Wednesday, as manager Mike Shildt was ejected over his pitcher’s hat.

In the seventh inning of the game, home plate umpire Joe West ordered Cardinals pitcher Giovany Gallegos to change his hat. West had noticed a white substance on the brim which was apparently sunscreen.

Shildt got upset and began to argue with West, claiming Gallegos was unfairly singled out. After he was ejected, he went into a wild rant after the game against the umpire.

“This is baseball’s dirty little secret, and it’s the wrong time and the wrong arena to expose it,” Shildt said, per ESPN. “Here’s the deal. First of all, Gio wears the same hat all year. Hats accrue dirt. Hats accrue substances.

“Did Gio have some sunscreen at some point in his career to make sure he doesn’t get some kind of melanoma? Possibly. Does he use rosin to help out? Possibly. Are these things that baseball really wants to crack down on? No.”

According to ESPN, Gallegos had told West that the substance in question was sunscreen. West asked him to change his hat anyway, saying “we don’t want anybody to be accused of cheating or any of that stuff.”

Shildt later released a statement saying: “I have a great working relationship with the umpires and Major League Baseball. They have a lot of challenges to doing their job and they do it well. Having to police foreign substances, candidly, shouldn’t have to be a part of their job.”
