Cardiff City transfers: Bluebirds to battle West Brom, Derby County, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City for international striker

Here are your Cardiff City transfer headlines for Tuesday, June 8.

Bluebirds to battle clutch of Championship clubs for Northern Ireland star

Cardiff City are reportedly among a glut of Championship clubs ready to snap up Northern Ireland international Kyle Lafferty on a free transfer.

According to Football League World, West Brom, Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Derby, Birmingham, Ipswich and Wigan are all thought to be taking a look at Lafferty, who turns 34 in September.

The striker has 13 clubs to his name, the most recent of which being Kilmarnock, for whom he scored 13 goals in 13 appearances in all competitions.

Cardiff have already added to their striker stable this summer, having announced the capture of James Collins on a free transfer from Luton Town.

However, it is likely they are bracing themselves for the possibility that Kieffer Moore departs. Both the club and Mick McCarthy, though, hope that won’t be the case.

Gareth Bale to Cardiff odds slashed again

The odds on Gareth Bale making a sensational, albeit highly unlikely, return to his hometown club this summer continue to tumble.

Cardiff are now, somewhat incredibly, only 6/1 to sign the Wales talisman this summer.

One of the many scenarios touted surrounding Bale’s future rests upon him negotiating an exit deal from Real Madrid this summer. It has been reported that he will leave and ask for half of his £13m salary as a pay-out.

However, whether the tables have turned following the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti, a manager who clearly admires him and has hinted he has a future there next season.

Should he leave, though, then his next destination is clearly a bubbling topic of discussion.

Tottenham, the club at which he made his name and spent last season on loan, have remained at the top of the bookmaker’s odds list, with the price now at 11/4.

Next on the odds list is any MLS club. The Welshman has spoken of his desire to potentially play Stateside one day and the bookies have him to head to the US at 5/1.

However, third in line are the Bluebirds. Cardiff are now just 6/1 and have been installed as third favourites by bookies, if we are lumping the MLS clubs into one. Considering that on May 26 they were joint-10th favourites at 16/1, that is quite the jump.

It’s still something of a romantic hope at the minute, though, it must be said. But, hey, weirder things have happened.

Gareth Bale next club odds:

  • Tottenham 11/4
  • Any MLS club 5/1
  • Cardiff City 6/1
  • Barcelona 8/1
  • Chelsea 8/1
  • Any Chinese Super League club 10/1
  • Arsenal 10/1
  • Juventus 10/1
  • Manchester United 12/1
  • Inter Milan 16/1
  • Manchester City 16/1

Bluebirds monitor relegated Championship duo

Cardiff City are weighing up a raid on relegated Championship duo Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers in a bid to further bolster their forward line for next season.

The Bluebirds have already added Luton Town’s James Collins to their ranks this summer, with Mick McCarthy clearly keen on giving his side more firepower next season and remove the burden from star man Kieffer Moore.

And it seems they might not be done yet.

Gist Vile understands the Bluebirds have also taken a look at Millers forward Freddie Ladapo and Wycombe Wanderers striker Uche Ikpeazu this summer.

Ladapo has previously been linked with Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough this summer, and netted nine goals in 42 games last season.

The 29-year old currently has one year left on a three-year contract at the New York Stadium, and it’s believed Rotherham would not stand in his way should a suitable offer come in.

However, reports on Teesside have already suggested that Rotherham’s valuation of the player could well prove a stumbling block to any hopes of a move to the north east, and it’s understood Cardiff could well find a deal equally difficult should they wish to step up any interest.

In contrast, Wycombe striker Ikpeazu could prove a more attractive option, with sources indicating that the forward has a release clause of around £500,000 on his current contract at Adams Park.

Derby County ‘in talks’ with Cardiff target

Derby County are reportedly locked in talks with Martyn Waghorn over securing his future at the club.

Earlier in the window, the Bluebirds were said to be monitoring the player’s situation, with the striker out of contract this summer.

However, according to DerbyshireLive, the Rams are in discussions over tying the forward down to a new deal.

Waghorn made 32 appearances in the past season and scored five goals, two of them coming in the dramatic final fixture against Sheffield Wednesday.

The 31-year-old joined the Rams from Ipswich Town three years ago and his record for the Rams is 26 goals in 111 league games.
