Cardiff boosted by six Wales squad players as three Six Nations stars are rested

Cardiff will have six of their Wales squad members available for Saturday’s Arms Park clash with Glasgow, as three front-line internationals are given the week off.

Winger Josh Adams, scrum-half Tomos Williams – who has been going through concussion protocols – and back-five forward Seb Davies are all being rested by the region following their exertions in the Six Nations. You can read the latest fall-out from a disappointing Championship campaign here.

But centre Willis Halaholo, props Rhys Carre and Dillon Lewis and back row trio Josh Navidi, Ellis Jenkins and James Ratti will all be on board for the United Rugby Championship meeting with Danny Wilson’s team. Fly-half Rhys Priestland, who was released from the Welsh squad on injury grounds earlier this month, is doubtful due to his ongoing Achilles problem.

Centre Rey Lee Lo and wing Aled Summerhill could be in the mix as they have come through their return-to-play protocols so far, having returned early from South Africa after picking up head knocks. But wing Owen Lane (shoulder) and flanker Shane Lewis-Hughes (fractured ribs) will be out for another three or four weeks after also being hurt against the Lions.

Explaining his thinking on the Wales squad players, director of rugby Dai Young said: “It’s right and proper to give them at least a week off at some point. Everybody else has had one. You should never be disadvantaged because you are representing your country. If you play, there are physical elements why you need a rest and even if you don’t play there is always some mental fatigue.

“So it’s definitely my intention to make sure those boys get a week off at some point. The rest of our squad have. It’s my decision to give Josh Adams, Tomos and Seb a week off now to get over the Six Nations games and then we look at giving the others a week off a little bit further down the line.”

Cardiff will be looking to bounce back from a heavy 40-3 defeat to the Stormers in Cape Town when they play hosts to Glasgow who lie third in the URC having beaten Edinburgh 30-17 last weekend.
